bluetooth on ubuntu 10 10

Image
bluetooth on ubuntu 10 10 I was testing bluetooth usability on ubuntu 10.10. I used to install bluez manager and utils, but I like the minimalistic approach unless it doesnt work ;) Adding a new device went ok from the 2nd try, the 1st time it found the phone, but Forward button was gray, even though I selected the phone in the list of found devices. Sending files to the phone went fine. Receiving files from the phone failed. I went to preferences. When clicking Receive Files I got an error: cannot start personal file sharing preferences program In ubuntu maverick the personal file sharing is not installed. And this is NOT the same thing as Shared Folders applet. You need to install gnome-user-share package, which is not installed by default in 10.10 After that if you click Receive Files, check the corresponding options from the Receive Files section.

Image
Bluetooth on ubuntu 11 10 Updated 01.12.2011 Bluetooth is something thats supposed to be simple and work out of the box but frequently is not working at all. Thats why every time I install a new OS I test if bluetooth is working. So, fresh ubuntu 11.10, client is Samsung Galaxy phone, lets see what works in ubuntu. Receiving files works fine. Update : receiving fails if youre sending to Windows Mobile phone! Pairing initiated from the computer works fine. Sending files - failed with the a permission denied error. After searching/asking Ive come across a bug report. Update : sending works if you send to a Windows Mobile device. So on ubuntu 11.10 this is the summary picture for send/receive: Since I still need to send files I have to mount my phone with obexfs . In short: install obexfs pair the phone with the PC (works from the gui) Get the device MAC and mount it with obexfs: $ sudo apt-get install obexfs $ hcitool scan Scanning ...     8F:77:17:77:44:16 ...

Boot an ISO Image using Grub2 or Install Ubuntu without needing a CD DVD or USB drive

Boot an ISO Image using Grub2 or Install Ubuntu without needing a CD DVD or USB drive Grub2 is capable of directly booting ISO images for many Linux distros if the entries have been properly defined in the Grub2 configuration files. What if you don't have access to a CD/DVD drive/disc or a USB drive and you want to install Ubuntu (or any other Linux)? Or if you want to perform some system maintenance tasks like those related to partitions or filesystems which can only be performed from within a Live CD environment? Grub2 comes in handy at that point as it would not only boot the ISO image from your HDD, but it would also let you perform an installation from the ISO image if you want to. Things You Need An existing install of Ubuntu (or any other Linux) with a working instance of Grub2. The desired ISO image that you want to boot/install. Procedure The ISO image can be placed virtually anywhere on your HDD but for the sake of simplicity, we would place it inside a new directory unde...

Boost System Performance RAM specifically in Ubuntu using zRam!

Image
Boost System Performance RAM specifically in Ubuntu using zRam! I gotta admit that apart from all the criticism, MS Windows Kernel is pretty good at managing memory and system resources. Although the GNU/Linux Kernel is certainly one of the most robust & highly secured ones out there, but sometimes I do feel a bit "sluggish" performance while the Memory gets filled and when its time to move the data between SWAP (virtual memory, a file, stored on or as a partition in GNU/Linux) to the RAM or vice versa when comparing with the Windows Kernel. What the heck is "SWAP"? If youre a bit new to all this hype :)... then SWAP is the temporary storage location that holds programs and other whatnots just before theyre loaded into your actual/physical RAM for execution. Anyhow, apparently there are few solutions for enhancing the performance and one in particular called zRam (successor of a project known as "Compcache", link below) thats integrated into the GNU/Li...

Developers will be able to write .sh Bash scripts in Windows, and even use emacs to edit code.

Bodhi Linux 1 1 0 Ubuntu and Enlightenment based Promising Linux distribution

Image
Bodhi Linux 1 1 0 Ubuntu and Enlightenment based Promising Linux distribution Bodhi Linux is a relatively new GNU/Linux distribution being developed by Jeff Hoogland. I had read couple of reviews of Bodhi Linux earlier, but comment from the maintainer of Bodhi Linux in the review of MacPup 520 Linux ( you can read this review here ) , made me take notice of Bodhi Linux, and I decided to give Bodhi Linux a try. Bodhi Linux 1.1.0 is a distribution based on popular GNU/Linux distribution Ubuntu, Bodhi is a Sanskrit word which to some extent means enlightenment, it is widely used in Buddhism and thus the name itself for Bodhi Linux is positive. Bodhi Linux is based on Enlightenment Window Manager, I am huge fan of Enlightenment, I recently reviewed MacPup 520 and I was very impressed with what I saw, thus I had huge expectations from Bodhi Linux. The test environment was very modest, I have a close to four year old Core 2 Laptop with 1.5Ghz processor, which runs VirtualBox, I tested Bodhi ...

BleachBit 0 9 Is Released How to Install it in Ubuntu Linux

Image
BleachBit 0 9 Is Released How to Install it in Ubuntu Linux Few hours after my little CCleaner (system cleaner for MS Windows) bragging ;-), I checked for updates about BleachBit and realized they in fact has released it to a new version which makes it now the 0.9!. If youre a bit new, then Bleachbit is another excellent cross-platform (yep, you can use it in both GNU/Linux and MS Windows) free utility, that lets us remove unnecessary files (such as cache and other temporary settings) of a lot of individual applications from a singe "command center" window :). It cleans the web browser cache, cookies, history (Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Chromium and a whole lot others!), GIMP, OpenOffice (although LibreOffice aint supported yet), MS Office, Gnome 2 and the Gnome 3/Shell desktops search and history, Skype, TeamViewer, Yum (Fedoras default software manager), Wordpad, Winrar, Winzip + a huge list of other apps as usual. "one place to rule them all!" ;-)... Just like ...

Both CPU running almost 100 on Ubuntu

Image
Both CPU running almost 100 on Ubuntu My computer has a duel core processor. I am using Ubuntu 10.10. I have a 1 GB RAM. I allocate 2 GB space for swap partition (actually 1 GB is sufficient, but I select 2GB for testing, and I am continuing with this huge space). Normally both of my CPU uses very low process. But for some days (I guess after updating 200 line kernel it occur) I am facing an uncommon problem. I found on system monitor applet and conky that, both of my CPU running about 100%. I am not sure why this happening, but feeling afraid. I did not run any application when took the pictures below except Firefox: Look at the image above. CPU 1 working 90.7 % and CPU 2 running 88.1% Look at the image above closely (click to enlarge). In this list of running processes three unnamed application running at first. Ther are not like to show them, so scrollbar goes down after them automatically. Conky also showing quite same result. CPU1 taking 89% of whole process and CPU2 also taking 8...

Bootreihenfolge ändern Anleitung Linux Ubuntu Grub

Image

Boot Repair tool for Ubuntu is Updated with Lots of New Features!

Image
Boot Repair tool for Ubuntu is Updated with Lots of New Features! Boot-Repair is a bloody excellent little utility that lets you recover your boot-loader configuration (GRUB actually) related settings which seems to be pretty common with MS Windows 7 and Ubuntu users since when you do updates in MS Windows and if the OS core files are updated, then sometimes Windows just update/over-write (errrr :D) MBR thus breaking GRUB boot-loader files, completely or partially. Although when it was released few months ago some of the advanced options were not shown to the Ubuntu users but I dont know when it happened, but the author has released a new version/updated of Boot-Repair which brings a lot of very useful, advanced features such as ... *. A simple welcome screen from which now we can choose either: 1. "Recommended Repair": If you choose this option, then you dont have to do anything the Boot-Repair will take care everything for you. From checking the partition to removing your c...

Block ping request from a specific IP using iptables on Ubuntu 12 04 Tested

Block ping request from a specific IP using iptables on Ubuntu 12 04 Tested My Sever OS:Ubuntu 12.04 IP: 192.168.56.100 My Client OS:Ubuntu 13.04 IP 192.168.56.101 Task Block the ping request from client to server, so that when client ping the server, client should not get any reply. Solution Add the below rule in iptable of the server iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p icmp --icmp-type echo-request -s 192.168.56.101 -j DROP You have to specify the icmp-type as echo-request other wise the outgoing ping from server to client also will get blocked because when you ping client from server following happens :-ICMP echo-request is send to client :-ICMP echo-reply is send back from client to server(this get dropped if no icmp-type is indicated) Save rules in iptables permanently If you give iptables-save rules will be saved for the current session but will be gone once you reboot your machine. To save them permanently Open / etc/network/interfaces file vim /etc/network/interfaces Append the below...
