Bodhi Linux 2 2 0 Released

Image
Bodhi Linux 2 2 0 Released The Bodhi Team and I are very happy to present to you our 2.2.0 release - the first Bodhi images to feature the stable E17 desktop. As with all minor Bodhi release existing users can simply upgrade their existing installs of Bodhi 2.x.y This release is exciting for a number of reasons. To start with, we are introducing a few new things with this update release. With this release, we will now be maintaining two 32bit install discs: One that is PAE enabled by default and one that is not. The kernel without PAE will be an older stable kernel (in this case 3.2) while the PAE enabled kernel will be the latest kernel - for 2.2.0 this means 3.7 kernel. Our 64bit release also comes with the 3.7 kernel. These discs are also our first released images that are hybrid ISO images. This means that you can write the image directly to a flash drive simply using the dd command and it will become a bootable media. You no longer need to use unetbootin (unless you want to) to cr...

Bodhi Linux 3 0 0 Release Candidate 1

Image
Bodhi Linux 3 0 0 Release Candidate 1 At Bodhi we work firmly on a "its ready when its ready schedule" as opposed to sticking to our set release goals and churning out something we are not happy with. Better late than never as the saying goes! Just ten days after the targeted release date I am happy to share our first Release Candidate for Bodhi Linuxs third major release: As you can see from the image our default theme has matured some (it is nearly complete in fact). For a full change log you can see my running TODO list as we work towards our 3.0.0 stable release here. Download Links 32bit  - ISO Image, MD5sum Legacy  - ISO Image, MD5sum 64bit  - ISO Image, MD5sum Chromebook  - ISO Image, MD5sum Legacy Hardware Support The most important new thing in this release is the addition of an ISO image that supports legacy hardware. The legacy ISO image features a 3.2 kernel that will work on 486 machines (or newer), including non-PAE hardwar...

Bodhi Linux ARM Alpha Release for RaspBerry Pi

Image
Bodhi Linux ARM Alpha Release for RaspBerry Pi Edit/Update: You can find the latest release here ->  http://www.bodhilinux.com/downloads_mobile.php Ive been busy with lots of different Bodhi things of the late. The latest of my many projects has been getting the Bodhi desktop functional on the RaspBerry Pi: This first release while having some rough edges does give you a fully functional Enlightenment desktop on top of a Debian Wheezy ARMEL base. I am providing two different downloads which you can find on our source forge page here. The first is an easy to use .img file that can be written to 4GB or larger SD card. If you dislike .img files Ive also provided tar files that contain the boot partition (which should be written to a vfat partition at the start of an SD card) and the root file system (which should be written to the second partition on a card that is extX). The default logins for this image are: bodhi/bodhi root/raspberry The "bodhi" user has sudo rights by def...

Booklet printing in Linux Solved

Image
Booklet printing in Linux Solved I always love to print files as booklet which has many pages. Yes, official files can not be print as a booklet, but unofficial files like ebooks, journals, articles, web pages etc. could be printed as booklet. It save paper and toner ink. So, today we will learn how to print files as booklet in Linux operating system. Most of the printer driver support booklet printing in windows platform, but what about Linux? Yes there are some method. Though company did not provide any tweaks, you can still print booklet in Linux OS. There are several tweaks can be found on internet, but I discovered the easiest method. Printing a file in a booklet style can be done easily with acrobat reader in any linux platform. I am using LinuxMint13 to do this job in this moment. Please follow me to enable booklet print option in your linux machine. At first, search acroread in synaptic package manager. Tick it and press apply to download. You should download this file with acr...

Bodhi Linux 2 0 1 Bug Fix Release

Image
Bodhi Linux 2 0 1 Bug Fix Release Some of you might be slightly confused by this posting since our 2.0.0 release was published just five days ago. No piece of software is perfect and our 2.0.0 release is no exception to this. Since we released last Thursday our 2.0.0 discs have received over 15,000 downloads - a number the Bodhi team and I are extremely happy with. With this large influx of users we have received a piles of user feedback and bug reports - some of which need to be dealt with right away (not two months from now when our next scheduled update release is set to come out). With this in mind I would like to cut straight to the point and give you the disc downloads for 2.0.1 (as always torrent is fastest): 32bit - Direct Download - Torrent Download - md5sum 64bit - Direct Download - Torrent Download - md5sum What was so pressing you ask that demanded we release bug fix ISO images now inst...

Bodhi Linux 3 0 0 Beta Release

Image
Bodhi Linux 3 0 0 Beta Release Its been two months since we had our alpha release and since then Ubuntu 14.04 has released as "stable". That means the core for our upcoming Bodhi 3.0.0 release is finally stable enough for me to stamp a "beta" label onto it. For those that do not really care what I have to say and just want a download link, this beta release comes in the following three flavors: 32bit - ISO Image, MD5sum 64bit - ISO Image, MD5sum Chromebook - ISO Image, MD5sum Those looking for a change log / my TODO list for 3.0.0 please see here. All of these images are built directly on top of the latest Ubuntu 14.04 packages. The 32bit and 64bit images utilize the 3.13 Linux kernel, while the Chromebook image utilizes a 3.11 kernel due to hardware compatibility issues. The Chromebook image is tested/designed to work with the Acer C720 and HP 14" Chromebooks. It could very well work with other Chromebooks, but they have not been tested. For more informatio...

Bodhi Linux ARMHF RootFS

Image
Bodhi Linux ARMHF RootFS If youve been following my blog (or my updates on Google+) then odds are you know I currently have my hands on two ARM devices (plus a third in the mail) I am working on creating Bodhi Linux images for. With this in mind Ive decided I am going to start maintaining a generic ARMHF root file system to make creating Bodhi Linux images for new ARM devices easier for myself and others. You will always be able to find the latest copy of this file system on Bodhi source forge page here. The default user name is armhf  and the default password is bodhilinux . The default user has sudo access by default. Essentially on any device we have a functioning Linux kernel for - it should simply be as easy as extracting that file system to a bootable location. Copying over /lib/firmware and /lib/modules and then telling your ARM system to boot from this new file system. As an aside - this is the first blog post I am writing from the Samsung ARM Chromebook with the Bodhi des...

Bodhi Linux RaspBerry Pi Beta

Image
Bodhi Linux RaspBerry Pi Beta Edit/Update: You can find the latest release here ->  http://www.bodhilinux.com/downloads_mobile.php A little over six weeks ago I posted a very early image of Bodhi for the RaspBerry Pi. Today I am happy to let everyone know that I have published what I consider to be a "beta" quality image: Bodhi for Pi:  http://bodhilinux.com/downloads_mobile.php The download comes in the form of a compressed .IMG file, which can be extracted and then written to an SD card (2GB minimum). The first thing worth noting in this release is that the default username/password are different: Username: pi Password: bodhilinux As for changes, this release is now utilizing Terminology as its default terminal emulator and PCManFM file browser has been replaced with the native EFM (Enlightenment File Manager). The issues our first image had with networking and flash drives should also be resolved with this release. Also worth noting is that the AppCenter is now...

Bodhi Linux 3 0 0 Road Map FAQ and Donation Drive Updates

Bodhi Linux 3 0 0 Road Map FAQ and Donation Drive Updates The Here and Now - What is going on with Bodhi 2.x.y In September of last year I posted a notice that the Bodhi 2.x.y update release cycle would be moving to releases three times a year. Then I went and made a liar out of myself when we didnt have a 2.5.0 release in January. For the sake of clarity I would like to let folks know that Bodhi 2.4.0 will be the last set of updated discs in our 2.x.y release cycle. That being said - our 2.x.y software repositories will keep seeing their normal software updates through the summer of 2014. After this point the 2.x.y release will be moved into "security updates only" mode. Meaning the only changes to software in the 2.x.y repos at that point will be to patch security vulnerabilities. 2.x.y will continue getting security updates until 2017 when Ubuntu 12.04 reaches its end of life. The Future - Plans for Bodhi 3.x.y Our plan for major releases has always been every two years ju...

Booting Disk Images in Linux

Image
Booting Disk Images in Linux A Picture can be Worth a Thousand Words Sometimes there is no substitute for booting a computer to gather data.  But the forensic consequences of  directly booting the system under investigation are prohibitive.  And, while it can be possible to restore a computer image to another hard drive and install that drive in the computer hard drive for booting, this can be costly, very time consuming, and you only get one shot before youve changed the data from original (and repeated boots may be desirable depending on the investigation). In response to this, tools like LiveView were created.  The concept was to boot the forensic image, rather than restore it, and capture all system changes in a disk cache.  The operating system could be booted quickly and repeatedly from an original state.  However, I never found LiveView to be very effective, and it the past few years I have avoided Windows-based tools whenever possible . En...

Bodhi Linux is NOT Dead It is just Changing Hands

Bodhi Linux is NOT Dead It is just Changing Hands A week ago I posted that I was stepping down from my position as doing the primary development work for the Bodhi Linux project. I just wanted to clear the air that this change does not  mean that the project is shutting down. In the previous post I ask for folks looking to help and since then I have talked to a number of different people and currently have a few different people working to take over my previous duties. So let me make one thing clear for worried folks: Bodhi is not dead and a 3.0 release will be happening still. New timelines are still being figured out and when the new folks working on development have their footing fully underneath them they will be sharing more information I am sure. As for myself, I will still be sparing enough time to the project to field questions the new folks might have and provide insights wherever needed - I just wont directly be doing the heavy lifting any longer. ~Jeff Hoogland

Bodhi Linux 1 2 0 is Released! Added support for ARM

Image
Bodhi Linux 1 2 0 is Released! Added support for ARM Bodhi Linux is another distribution thats based on Ubuntu. Although it seems that theyve done a lot of changes to the system... it seems like a completely different distribution to me ;-). Anyhow, Bodhi linux is not for everyone though, in a way. The reason is simple. It uses the Enlightenment Window manager as the desktop "creator" which has a  reputation of being extremely fast and low on system resource. But if youre looking for a modern desktop with fancy effects + with features that Major desktops such as Gnome/Qt-KDE or even the relatively new Unity desktop, etc offers, then you may not like it. Okay, I take back that "not a modern desktop" part ;-)... But the rest assured, if youre looking for complete desktop with extremely faster responsiveness, well in that case, Bodhi Linux can be extremely competitive. Unlike many other distributions, Bodhi also has a completely different UI design thats optimized for ...
